Meet the Maker | Hudson Made

Meet the Maker | Hudson Made

From the minute we saw the beautifully designed products and branding of the Hudson Made range, we knew that we were going to be hooked. And then came the scents... Botanical ingredients home grown by founder Bill Hovard at his farm in upstate New York, blended to create lush and unique body care products that are absolutely addictive. Need we say more? We'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Tell us about yourself and how you came to be a maker / owner of your creative business. What inspired you to be where you are now?

For a number of years I lived in New York City and worked as a designer marketing and branding other companies and their products. Most of these were large global brands and their products were manufactured in remote corners of the world. I personally lacked connection to the products and the people making the products. In 2002 I purchased a small farm in upstate New York that was in disrepair and my life suddenly changed forever. I renovated the property and it ultimately became the inspiration for my brand.

How long have you been working in this role and what do you love about it?

I started Hudson Made in 2012. I am fortunate to now live in a pristine part of the world and am inspired daily by my surroundings and the community of artists, makers and farmers in the area.

Tell us about your daily routine i.e. where is your business based, do you work within a team or individually, within an office or studio space?

I start my day early. Morning coffee or tea at dawn. A time of reflection and quiet before a day of work. We grow some of the botanicals used in our products so in the Summer months a few hours each morning are dedicated to weeding, watering, harvesting. The Winter season is when we do most of our product development and this is done in our renovated 19th century dairy barn which is an ongoing source of inspiration. Our daily operations are conducted in the small hamlet of Andes, NY where we operate out of the old 19th century mercantile building. We are a small team of 4.

What is the inspiration for your product range and what would be your favourite item in the collection?

The inspiration for our collection is drawn from the beautiful region where we live. Our favourite items are the face and body oils. We source some of the highest quality organic base oils available and infuse them with organically grown botanicals from the farm. The products are the highest quality we can achieve and have wonderful benefits for the skin. These products are produced in limited quantity and based on how much material we can grow.

At P+P we feel very passionate about supporting other designers and makers in all aspects of their business. What is one piece of advice you would give other creatives when considering their own start up?

Follow your passion. Work from the heart and listen to your intuition. Experiment, make mistakes and learn from them. Keep an eye on finance and manage growth. Love what you do and find the joy even in the mundane tasks that are required.

What was the biggest challenge that you came across when starting your creative business and how did you overcome this hurdle?

I do not have a business partner and started the business myself. This necessitates wearing a lot of hats and taking on a lot of responsibilities. That said, I have a vast network of friends, entrepreneurs and resources who offer support. It is important to get an outside perspective so a support network is vital.

There are so many beautiful products being released at the moment. Are there any particular designers, product collections or bloggers that you love and why?

I gain a lot of inspiration from my community close to home and online. Although we create natural grooming products, I take inspiration from a variety of makers working in fashion, food and art. We are in a remarkable era and so many talented people around the world are creating and making exceptional products. Here are some of my current favourites: https://siobhanbarrett.com Siobhan is literally down the hall from our studio and she makes all these beautiful items herself. http://www.waysidecider.com Wayside Cider is down street and they produce some of the most delicious hard apple cider from old growth apple trees. https://mquan-studio.myshopify.com Makes spectacular pottery that is quite unique http://banditphotographer.blogspot.com Bandit Photographer Cory Piehowicz is an amazing talent and captures a rugged reality through his lens.

Are there any creatives that you would love to collaborate with and why?

I enjoy collaborating with photographers and working with them to tell stories. I give them a direction and then allow them to explore. We are currently developing a series about Workers as a tie-in to our worker's soap. I also enjoy collaborating with small farmers to help us grow botanicals. Learn from them and allow them to help shape our products from the ground up.

What exciting things are you working on at the moment and what are your aspirations for 2017?

We are expanding our farming partnerships and taking this to other regions of the country as our growing season is so limited on the East Coast. We are also expanding our product offering and introducing a broader gender neutral assortment.
