Meet the Maker | Organics for Lily

What better way to celebrate the week of International Women's Day than to hear the insights of naturopath and Organics for Lily founder, Melissa Khonsavang. Melissa tells us about her journey so far and how her career in Naturopathy lead her to developing a beautiful range of teas and tea accessories. With her 2017 aspiration of developing tea blends that focus of womens health, we know we're excited to see what 2017 brings!

Tell us about yourself and how you came to be a maker / owner of your creative business. What inspired you to be where you are now?

My love of tea and background in Naturopathy inspired me to create a range of therapeutic blends for health and wellness.

How long have you been working in this role and what do you love about it?

Organics for lily began 3 years ago and I love everything about it.  My favourite part is when I am in the studio working with herbs and experimenting on new blends.

Tell us about your daily routine i.e. where is your business based, do you work within a team or individually, within an office or studio space?

We are currently based in our home studio in Melbourne's West, which we are fast outgrowing.  I have a small team of friends and family who help out. My hubby works a lot behind the scenes too.  The days are always different depending on what is happening, it usually consists of  answering emails, blending and packaging tea, attending meetings, planning events and much more.  No day is ever the same.

What is the inspiration for your product range and what would be your favourite item in the collection?

I definitely love to help people improve their health and wellbeing and achieve their health goals.  There is nothing more rewarding when I get an email from a customer to say, our tea has helped improved their health or quality of life.  It makes all the hard work and late nights totally worth it.

At P+P we feel very passionate about supporting other local designers and makers in all aspects of their business. What is one piece of advice you would give other creatives when considering their own start up?

Work hard, stay focused and set goals.

What was the biggest challenge that you came across when starting your creative business and how did you overcome this hurdle?

There are so many challenges you face when starting a creative business and you continue to face challenges everyday as the business grows.  I think getting a great support network around you, allows you overcome any of the hurdles that come your way.

There are so many beautiful Australian made products being released at the moment. Are there any particular designers, product collections or bloggers that you love and why?

Oh my goodness there are so many, but some of my favourites at the moment are Lucy Ceramics, Fox & Ramona, Emily Green, Renee Waters, Bridget Bodenham and For me by Dee just to name a few.  We are so lucky to have so many talented Australian makers who make amazing products.

What exciting things are you working on at the moment and what are your aspirations for 2017?

We are working on a few new blends including a womens wellness range and we hope to have some exciting new tea accessories available too.  Our aspirations for 2017 are to attend our first interstate trade show and continue to grow our brand.
