Meet the Maker | SAIDE

Meet the Maker | SAIDE

When we started developing our Peddle + Potter supplier list, we searched high and low for brands and products that aligned with our ethos and overall brand style. You can imagine our excitement when we came across this beautiful range of environmentally considerate, deliciously flavoured candles from SAIDE.
SAIDE (pronounced Say-eed) brings new and unique scents to the candle market, with flavours inspired by some of our favourite things at P+P. Let's be honest, they had us at 'Coffee Bean'! We hope you enjoy reading about the journey so far for founders Hailey and Ilona, as they keep it real about how to grow an amazing brand such as this one.

Tell us about yourself and how you came to be a maker / owner of your creative business. What inspired you to be where you are now?

Ilona and I studied business and marketing together and it wasn't long before we realised we had very similar passions and interests in fashion + homewares. We both had full time jobs but we had a buzzing creative flair to be a maker + own our own business. Moving into our first homes around the same time, we were homewares crazy and thats when candles came about. We wanted to introduce a minimal look candle with an amazing range of fragrances you don't come about too often, whilst being environmentally conscious. Testing and trialling was in full swing trying to perfect the candle and days and weeks went by trying to find that perfect business name. We launched SAIDE in Feb 2016 and over the months the response was super positive, something we were not expecting so quickly! We loved it and knew this was it! We now have boutique stockists all over Australia + online.

How long have you been working in this role and what do you love about it?

Over a year old, it has been an amazing ride full of learnings and to watch it grow we had never imagined! The best thing about our business is talking to our customers who keep coming back and absolutely love our candles! It is the best feeling + why we love what we do!

Tell us about your daily routine i.e. where is your business based, do you work within a team or individually, within an office or studio space?

We both work from home which gives us the flexibility + freedom. You will either find us hand-pouring batches of candles, packing orders, answering stockist enquires, updating our website/Instagram to taking styled candle shots.

What is the inspiration for your product range and what would be your favourite item in the collection?

Minimal with an edge that ties back with our home + fashion styling. We also focus to be environmentally conscious, hence why we created our range with calico bag packaging so both the canister and calico bags can be re-used to reduce waste. (The canister also makes a great succulent pot! :)) Our favourite item in our collection would be our Fig large soy candle; it's a wood-wick candle so it has a beautiful soft crackle and the Fig fragrance is seriously our favourite at the moment!!

At P+P we feel very passionate about supporting other local designers and makers in all aspects of their business. What is one piece of advice you would give other creatives when considering their own start up?

JUST TRY! As long as you have the passion + the drive, you can do anything.

What was the biggest challenge that you came across when starting your creative business and how did you overcome this hurdle?

Taking the risk of investing in something we didn’t know would work. We dedicated hours and hours to the business and never gave up, we were determined to get our name out there! The first year is definitely the hardest but as soon as you overcome that - the feeling is unexplainable.

There are so many beautiful Australian made products being released at the moment. Are there any particular designers, product collections or bloggers that you love and why?

We have met some talented brands over the year that focus on great quality handmade goods. Mandala Handmade is one of them - all natural skincare; organic, non-toxic, fair-trade, vegan + cruelty free. Gorgeous products, with a great focus! State of Permanence is another stunning brand. Handmade organic pottery, every piece has a unique edge which makes them so special.

Are there any creatives that you would love to collaborate with and why?

This year we would love to collaborate with a dynamic homewares + fashion creative to explore and push new boundaries.

What exciting things are you working on at the moment and what are your aspirations for 2017?

Currently we are working on a 100% natural essential oil candle range launching April- we are super excited! This year as well as launching our new product range, we are focused on building our stockists in more locations.
