Meet the Maker | The Beach People
At Peddle and Potter, not only are we passionate about supporting local and up-and-coming creatives, we also think it's really important that you know the story behind the brands that we're selling and the products that you as a customer are investing in.
So, we're really excited to kick off a new blog series 'Meet the Maker', which shares the behind the scenes stories of our beautiful suppliers. And what better way to start the journey than with the sister team Victoria Beattie and Emma Henderson of the New South Wales brand 'The Beach People.

Tell us about yourself and how you came to be a maker / owner of your creative business. What inspired you to be where you are now?
My name is Victoria and along with my sister Emma, we are The Beach People. We both grew up in an entrepenurial/creative family who love the sea. So the Beach People was destined to be really…
How long have you been working in this role and what do you love about it?
The Beach People began in the Summer of 2013. Emma and I love what we do, mainly because of the people that we get to work with. Working with each other and our team both here and abroad is the best! I personally love coming to work everyday as it's always different and there is always something new and exciting to work on.
Tell us about your daily routine i.e. where is your business based, do you work within a team or individually, within an office or studio space?
The Beach people HQ is in Australia, Northern New South Wales and we have an office in LA also. We have a wonderful team that are based all over the globe. My usual day normally starts early as this is the best time to chat with my team overseas and we have our meetings. Then the rest of the day is spent with the AU team getting things done! I tend to finish early most days to spend the afternoon by the sea with my son. Most weeks we are shooting for either our own wesbite or others that are sharing The Beach People story. We travel most months for sourcing or trade shows, it's never a dull moment thats for sure.
What is the inspiration for your product range and what would be your favourite item in the collection?
Emma and I are inspired by different things. Emma is our creative director and she is mostly inspired by design in fashion and architecture. She's inspired by travel also which you can see in our collection of Roundie's each having a name of the palce of inspiration. I am inspired by travel and culture, stories that people share and so on... My favourite item at the moment is the kids poncho because I use it every day for my little one when he gets out of the water. It's great because it also doubles as a roundie. Emma's favorite product would probably be the new bath collection in indigo, we're both so proud of our stonewash bath range.

At P+P we feel very passionate about supporting other local designers and makers in all aspects of their business. What is one piece of advice you would give other creatives when considering their own start up?
My advice would be to be strong! Business will always throw some curve balls at you, just hold on and grit your teeth and know that you can get through this! I also think to get a good accountant ha! Emma would say "stick to your true self" when designing.
What was the biggest challenge that you came across when starting your creative business and how did you overcome this hurdle?
Cashflow is always a challenge, especially when you grow quickly! You overcome this by getting good advice, support and a great finance team to help you along that journey.
There are so many beautiful Australian made products being released at the moment. Are there any particular designers, product collections or bloggers that you love and why?
I am wearing a dress by Albus Lumen as I answer these questions, I am loving their range at the moment, I also just purchased a KitX two piece for the holidays! So fun. Emma and I both love @yoli_and_otis for the kids and @stagni for shoes… there are so many great local brands to shop with these days!
Are there any creatives that you would love to collaborate with and why?
We are working on some exciting collaborations at the moment, some real dreams coming true, stay tuned as our lips are sealed on this one…
What exciting things are you working on at the moment and what are your aspirations for 2017?
We are working on our next bath collection and also a bedding range which is super exciting. Working closely with cotton over the last 3 years has meant that we feel very confident in producing high quality beautifully designed products in these categories... exciting!
